Location
The Town of Harpersville is located on the east central border of Shelby County along the Coosa River and U.S. Highway 280 approximately 28 miles southeast of Birmingham.
History
Harpersville is one of Shelby County’s oldest communities preceding both Shelby County and the State of Alabama. Big Springs as it was originally called was settled around 1815 by the Harper and Kidd families. In 1945, Harpersville officially incorporated and shortly after purchased the old Harpersville School converting it into the Town Hall and municipal complex. The city has produced two NBA stars George McGinnis (Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers) and Warren Kidd (Philadelphia 76ers).
Growth
The small town is growing due to the growth of business and development on Highway 280. The town contains Morgan Creek Winery, Old Baker Farm, a historic graveyard, Sunbelt sod farm, a drive in movie theater, numerous cotton fields, a public park, two private schools, and numerous subdivisions.
Harpersville is served by The Shelby County Chamber.
