With the teamwork of a very talented and professional staff the Shelby County Department of Facilities and General Services is responsible for maintaining Shelby County’s building structures, building grounds, recreational parks and sports facilities. These locations include the Shelby County Airport, Shelby County Sherriff’s Operations Center and Adult Jail, Sheriff’s Training Center and Firing Range Complex, County Community Corrections Facility, Regional Juvenile Detention Facility, County Services Building, Shelby County Fire and Emergency Medical Training Complex, County Courthouse, Exhibition Center, Heardmont Park Complex, 1996 Fields Sports Complex, Cahaba River Park and numerous other buildings and parks throughout the County.
Buildings operation and maintenance includes exterior and interior lighting, plumbing, electrical systems, air conditioning/heating systems and interior and exterior finishes. The department utilizes a computerized preventative maintenance program that routinely assigns all outstanding equipment preventive maintenance tasks. Work order request are also assigned and tracked using the same software.
The department is responsible for all capital improvement projects. These projects range in size and complexity from small projects designed in house and constructed either in house or thru public works contracts to large projects that require consultant design and public works bidding. The construction management for projects of all sizes is performed internally. Funding for these projects include Federal, State, County, City and other local funding sources.
The department frequently partners with other agencies such as Cities, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Alabama Department of Transportation, University of Montevallo, Jeff State Community College, County and City Boards of Education, The American Village and private industry in Shelby County on projects of all types.
