Shelby County Comprehensive Plan

A Path to the Future

The Shelby County Comprehensive Plan: A Path to the Future, previously adopted by the Shelby County Planning Commission on September 30, 2004, was ratified by the County Commission during its October 25, 2004 meeting. The action by the Commission solidified the Comprehensive Plan as more than a policy document.

Communities are the fundamental building blocks of A Path to the Future and include both communities of people and natural communities. At the heart of this vision is the concept that a pattern of land development based on the traditional neighborhood - focused on a neighborhood center providing for the daily needs of its residents internally - solves many of the problems of growth management facing communities today, while also creating or reinforcing the “sense of place” necessary for people to truly feel connected to their community.
