County, Zoo Partnership assists with new Black Bear Trail at Birmingham Zoo

Posted on August 5, 2015 at 8:51 AM by Phil Burns

Shelby County and the Birmingham Zoo recently partnered to assist with the buildout of an all-new exhibit contributing to animal conservation and welfare that was made possible through a lead gift from the Barbara Ingalls Shook Foundation. This new exhibit will officially open to the public on Friday, August 14th.

In July, many of the Shelby County Commission members and County Management visited the Zoo for a tour of the Zoo facilities.  The tour was given by William Foster, DVM, Birmingham Zoo CEO.  Dr. Foster reported that the Birmingham Zoo drew record attendance of 575,000 guests in 2014 with approximately 65% of the guests from the local surrounding area.  Shelby County residents represent a large percentage of the Zoo’s annual attendance.  With the completion of several new exhibits, such as the Black Bear trail and the Asian Passage and Arrival Experience, the Zoo anticipates an additional 60,000 guests annually, increasing the Zoo’s annual attendance to more than 635,000 guests.

The @2min video below highlights the recent visit.
