Senior Games Attract Thousands to Shelby County

For the first two weeks of June of 2017, more than 10,000 athletes participated in 22 sports across the Birmingham metro area as part of the National Senior Games. Shelby County hosted thousands of cyclists and triathletes competing in the 5k road race, 10k road race, 20k road race, 40k road race and the triathlon.

The 5k and 10k races were held June 5-6 at Oak Mountain State Park as well as the triathlon on June 11. Road racers participated in time trials along John Findlay Drive while the triathletes began their competition at Double Oak Lake in the day use area.

The City of Columbiana, Alabama hosted the 20k and 40K road races staging from Shelby County High School and travelled in and around the city.
